What is Toile de Jouy?
The word toile comes from the French word for cloth, but today it's most commonly used to describe Toile de Jouy, a decorative printed fabric that originated in the French town of Jouy-en-Josas in the late eighteenth century. Traditionally printed in a single colour on a pale background, classic toile depicts detailed pastoral scenes, gardens, architecture and everyday life, creating tiny stories across the fabric.
Originally found in beautifully dressed homes, toile quickly became a symbol of timeless French style, appearing on everything from wallpapers and bedding to upholstery and fashion. Today, designers continue to reinterpret the pattern for modern living while celebrating its rich heritage.
